About the NAACP

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. From the classroom to the ballot box, thousands of dedicated workers, organizers, leaders, and members continue to fight for social justice for all.

The New Mexico State Conference coordinates the work of NAACP branches and youth units across the state. We support local branches, advocate on statewide policy, host the annual State Conference, and connect New Mexico communities to the national NAACP movement.

Our roots run deep. The Albuquerque Branch was formally recognized on January 5, 1915, one of the oldest NAACP chapters in the nation. In the 1950s, Hobart LaGrone led both the local and state NAACP, worked with state senators to end school segregation in New Mexico, and helped win the 1952 Albuquerque Civil Rights Ordinance.
